Walkfashion Show *Detroit

What an amazing experience is that first thought I think of when trying to explain how I felt. Walkfashion was founded in 2009 by Daishawn Franklin and Crystal Bailey in their hometown Detroit, Michigan. According to their website, it was founded for the purpose to give a platform for emerging fashion in Detroit. Where now they have sold out shows expanding to the fashion capital New York City. You definitely want to take advantage on more of the accomplishments and stories.

On May 19th, 2018 Walkfashion hosted another successful event. One that I was lucky enough to see. It was a busy day! My sister graduated with her associates degree and that almost threw a wrench in being able to go to the event. Time was crunched this day for sure. I knew that supporting my sister would take the forefront but also out of a promise and networking opportunity from a friend I made the show in just enough time to catch the last walk. What I witnessed was nothing short of astounding.

Seeing the diverse group of women and men was an experience I won’t soon forget. From women of color, Asian, and even sisters with hijabs. Also women of different body physiques was great witnessing. It shows growth in the fashion industry, where being a size 0 is not the only way to be.

I have a new found respect for runway models that’s for sure. Seeing them walk several times in high heels, shoes that could’ve been too small or large and still make it work. Wobbly feet, yet head still held high. My adrenaline was pumping for them.

As this was my first time, I felt like I was Carrie and just missing out on a few girlfriends and some good cosmos. I was privy to seeing fashion from local designers. Designs ranging from laid back beach attire, wedding reception specials, and Negash footwear making footprints across the Detroit area.

Overall it was an exceptional experience and my only regrets are deciding to go last minute and not getting a press pass. Perhaps next time I’ll be backstage interviewing, doing makeup, or maybe hosting! Who knows what the future holds. I do know for certain it’ll be fashionable.
